Viva Italia! Italian Pride Celebration in The Villages
THE VILLAGES, FL — Italian pride was on parade Tuesday in Spanish Springs. The Italian American Parade celebrated the heritage of Italy with an evening of dancing, food and fun. THE VILLAGES, FL — Congratulations to Nancy Chop, who won an iPad Mini from Villages4sale.com after entering an online sweepstakes. The contest was held to celebrate the anniversary of the first year online for Villages4sale.
Nancy, who works at AA Auto Club South in The Villages, has been shopping Villages4sale since the website first launched. Before that, she was an avid buyer and seller on Ocala4sale.com for more than a decade. She said she was excited to see the website come to The Villages.
Villages4sale is a free local marketplace offering classified ads for residents of The Villages, Lady Lake, Leesburg and nearby communities. The website offers listings for homes, cars, boats, RVs, furniture and much more. Private sellers listings are offered free of charge.
Lady Lake Celebrates Arbor Day
LADY LAKE, FL — It was a gorgeous spring morning this past Arbor Day in Lady Lake, as rays of sunshine reflected off those who gathered around the grounds of North Lake Presbyterian Church on Rolling Acres Road to celebrate the planting of a red Crepe Myrtle tree in honor of Pastor Denny Dennison. Attendees of the celebration included the Children’s Youth Ministry, church members, as well as chief leaders in the community of Lady Lake.
The church named the tree after Pastor Dennison in acknowledgement of the phenomenal works he has done for them recently, as well as what he has done for the community of Lady Lake. The director of Parks and Recreation, Pastor Mike Smith, introduced key speakers such as Mike Burske (the Director of Parks and Recreation), Mayor Ruth Kussard, and Doris Turlo, who was present at the celebration to represent the Orange Blossom Gardens Lion’s Club. The Crepe Myrtle was donated to North Lake Presbyterian from the Orange Blossom Gardens Lion’s Club, as well as the rest of the trees that are planted on the church’s property.
Mayor Ruth Kussard led everyone into the pledge of allegiance and gave a speech and on the importance of Arbor Day, describing why this holiday plays a vital role in Lady Lake’s ecosystem. Betty Senter also spoke to the crowd about the history of Arbor Day. with an intriguing story of how Mr. Morton and his wife spread agricultural information and their enthusiasm for trees, which in turn encouraged others to participate in preserving trees. Mr. Morton and his wife’s works are still celebrated today, through a holiday created after them that is meant to inspire people and organizations into planting and caring for trees.
Betty also spoke on the history of the pencil, which had all the children intrigued and on the edge of their seats. One of the noteworthy facts Betty mentioned was that the demand for pencils is actually going up, despite the upwards trend in technology and computers. Another interesting tidbit she shared was that early American pencils in the 1800’s were made from the cedar wood that was located on Florida’s Cedar Key. The overwhelming demand for pencil wood at that time left the city completely harvested by the 1900’s. Since then, Florida has been more cautious to only harvest as much as the forest can sustain without causing a deficiency.
Doris Turlo from the Orange Blossom Gardens Lion’s Club mentioned that their club was challenged to plant 1 million trees within 1 year, to which they surpassed by planting over 100 million within those twelve months! They have since been challenged to plant 14 billion trees; and with over 12 billion planted so far, it is safe to say they are on the right track.

The Villages Antique Auto Club – Lake Sumter Landing Car Show

The Lake Sumter Landing Square last Friday night was a chilly one, but that didn’t stop folks from strolling to The Car Club Show which featured antique vehicles such as a 1956 Rocket 88, a 1964 Thunderbird, a 1970 Chevelle, and more. Bruce Smith from The Village of Buttonwood mentions his rare military styled Jeep he featured in the event this year is “a 1945 Ford GPW Jeep that’s one out of 281,448 Jeeps built by Ford that year.”The event was hosted by The Villages Antique Automobile Club of America. — Photo Gallery by Tara Gerber

Chili Cook-Off | Home & Garden Show Gallery
THE VILLAGES, FL — Lake Sumter Landing was buzzing with activity this weekend with the Annual Chili Cook-Off and Home & Garden Show. More than 50 competitors cooked up their best batch of chili for the judges. Some of the participants who participated included The McDonald Agency/Allstate Insurance, The Rotary Club of The Villages, Piping Hot Pepper Pot, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lake and Sumter Counties. The Home & Garden Show included more than100 exhibitors such as Village Palms Landscaping, Anchor Design Center, and Willow Creek Cabinetry. Jimmy from Kash Kurbing was excited to pass out bags with their business cards in them and said he was pleased with the turnout this year. “The events are really fun to attend and keep the community busy,” said Tracy W., who is a local Villager. “My favorite setup was the one from Fairfield Farms; I think their pieces were so unique and colorful!” — Report & Photo by Tara Gerber
Taste of Wellness Celebrates Health
LEESBURG, FL — This year’s Taste of Wellness Expo was a huge success, as close to 400 guests strolled from table to table sampling health products and learning different facts related to one’s well being. Some of the goods, services and information offered at the event included locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables, organic spices and seasonings, ion detox foot baths, various health-related examinations, as well as books on healthy lifestyles.
All proceeds from the event benefited the non-profit organization World Wellness Education. “We try to make a difference one story at a time,”says Jean Sumner, who is enthusiastic about her next event located near The Villages, the Sweet Sweet Wellness Event on February 8th. — By Tara Gerber
The Villages Arts & Crafts Festival – Spanish Springs
THE VILLAGES, FL — The Village of Spanish Springs was illuminated with colors from the entire spectrum at the recent arts and crafts show, as artists traveled from all over to present their exquisite artworks and custom pieces. Handiworks displayed at the Arts and Crafts Festival included Beachy Wreath designs, glass bottle night lights, silk flower arrangements, Pubs of Your Town Prints, weaved baskets, music boxes, and more. The event was packed with enthusiastic Villagers excited to see all the exquisite creations.
